This project at the Áras Brugha Hostel, a protected building in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, required the careful upgrading and modernisation of the existing protected structure while respecting and retaining the character of the original building. The works included the construction of a new three-storey extension, together with a single-storey ancillary extension providing additional space and improved facilities.
Works to the existing building included partial demolition, the formation of new openings, extensive internal alterations, a comprehensive mechanical and electrical upgrade and a high-quality internal fit-out. A new fire escape staircase was also installed as part of the overall improvement works.
The location presented additional logistical challenges, with an operational public bus stop immediately outside the site. Careful management of deliveries, construction traffic and site access was therefore essential to maintain safe pedestrian movement and minimise disruption to public transport and the surrounding area throughout the works.
Completed in March 2019, the project demonstrates Ormonde Construction’s proficiency in delivering complex refurbishment works to protected structures while successfully managing construction within a constrained and active public environment.
