Ormonde Construction carried out extensive redevelopment works at Kilkenny Greyhound Stadium, enhancing the facilities at this well-established sporting venue in Kilkenny City. The project included the construction of a new spectator stand, together with associated works to provide improved facilities for visitors and support the day-to-day operation of the stadium.

As part of the development, Ormonde Construction completed works for the installation of a new bar area, stairways and toilet facilities, creating a modern and improved environment for spectators. A key challenge of the project was that the works were undertaken within a live and operational sporting environment. Greyhound racing continued at the stadium every Wednesday and Friday throughout the construction period. This required careful planning and coordination of construction activities to ensure that racing operations could continue safely alongside the works.

Particular attention was given to site access, segregation of construction activities from the public, health and safety, sequencing of works and maintaining safe access to the operational areas of the stadium. Works were carefully programmed around race meetings to minimise disruption while maintaining progress on the construction programme. The completed development significantly improved the spectator amenities and overall functionality of the venue while allowing the stadium to remain operational throughout the works. The project demonstrates Ormonde Construction’s ability to successfully deliver sporting and leisure projects within challenging live environments, requiring careful programming, stakeholder coordination and robust health and safety management. This experience complements Ormonde Construction’s delivery of other sporting facilities, including UPMC Nowlan Park and Gowran Park Racecourse.
