Ormonde Construction acted as Main Contractor for the development of the Powerscourt Distillery and Visitor Centre, located within the historic Powerscourt Estate in Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow.

The project combined the construction of a new purpose-built whiskey distillery with the careful restoration of an 18th-century protected mill house. The new two-storey distillery building included a structural steel extension, insulated cladding, internal mezzanine flooring, specialist roofing systems, rooflights, stainless steel stairs, roller shutter doors and distinctive zinc cladding.

A key element of the project was the sensitive refurbishment of the historic mill house, dating back to 1730, which was transformed into a visitor centre and retail space. The works carefully incorporated the building’s original features, including an ancient water mill discovered within the existing foundations. A load-bearing glass floor was installed, allowing visitors to view this historic feature from ground-floor level.

The completed project successfully combines a modern whiskey production facility with the conservation of an important historic structure, creating a distinctive destination within the Powerscourt Estate.
